Mala Wharf is another great Maui beach dive. This dive should not be attempted without a guide. Many years ago this concrete pier was used by the trains to bring sugar cane to be loaded onto the ships waiting to transport the cane to other islands and to the Mainland. This was discontinued and the pier was turned into a fishing pier. Eventually parts of the pier collapsed and fell into the ocean. What is left of the pier is seen in the photo on the left. Now the pier is fenced off so no one can enter. Scuba diving at the end of the pier brings a lot of rubble to be seen with much marine growth and plenty of fish. The photo to the right shows just what one might expect to see on this dive. This is one of the best shore dives to be done on Maui. There are many swim threws and hiding places for the fish. As you can see from the photos above Mala is much prettier below. The depths reach 30-35 feet. It is also a popular night dive. The entrance is easy from the right side of the pier where there is a boat ramp. The swim out is easy as this area is protected from the trade winds and most of the time it is calm. This is a good dive for novice and advanced divers. Sometimes one can see reef sharks patrolling the area. To see more photos from this dive just click here.
