Scuba Diving Molokini Crater, Hawaii                      Manta Rays frequent the area

Scuba diving Molokini Crater is one of the better boat dives that can be done while in Hawaii. It is one of Hawaii's Marine conservation areas. This cone shaped formation just breaks the Pacific waters as you can see in the photo above. Scuba diving Molokini is very exciting to say the least. The inside shallower waters boast many species of fish, eel and some times a manta. The thirty minute boat ride is comfortable and safe. There are two trips daily made to this site. The A.M. trip is from 7:00a.m. with a return at 11:00a.m. The P.M. trip is at 11:30a.m. with a return around 3:30 p.m. This trip needs at least 5 divers for the boat to go.

Many snorkel boats visit this area and the snorkelers stay close to the inside perimeter in shallower water to see the many fish that make it their home. In the summer season an average of 2000 snorkelers a day visit the Crater. There are five dive sites in the center. When you make your decent here you will be in the 55-60 foot range and the dive will take you to depths of around 70 feet. Your first dive here will be in the 35-40 minute range with about a 45 minute surface interval while going to the next dive.

When you are scuba diving Molokini, at times Large Mantas will often come in and can be seen while touring the inside. Some of these mantas can be ten to fifteen feet in width. These animals are fascinating to watch as they glide effortlessly by you or above you and at times block the rays of the sun. These giant creatures are harmless to divers and fascinating to watch. Many species of fish and a few white tip sharks can also be seen here in some areas. Garden eel, which are not seen on many dives around the world can be seen on this dive in about seventy five feet of water poking their bodies out of the sand until a group of divers approach than they scurry back into the sand.

The dive on the outside reaches to depths of 350+ feet. Pelegic animals will often pass by while diving the outside or the back wall. On these dives one can see almost anything if you are lucky. This dive can be done on most days but there are times when another location must be used due to the weather. The waters out there are usually deep blue with a moderate current most of the time. This dive is for the more advanced or experienced diver due to the currents and the depths. The boat ride from Kihei is about a thirty minute comfortable ride. This is one dive you shouldn't miss. This is a very popular site for many divers coming to Hawaii. To reserve this dive or for more information call toll free, 1-877-873-4837.
